Notes from the work.
Objects. Colour. Thoughts. Doubts. Decisions. Random.
Ongoing.
Latest on top.
Colour shelving
Prep for 3days.
Making room for all the colours.
Jake built tiny shelves from wooden corner trims.
POP X COLOURS ON FURNITURE
Prep for unofficial 3daysofdesign.
Painted our dining table in Grass on white jeans.
STOOLS IN POP X COLOURS
Prep for unofficial 3daysofdesign.
Started painting a few pieces from home in the POP X colours.
First up: old IKEA stools.
The colours are spreading beyond blocks and sticks.
3daysofdesign
Woke up this morning thinking: what if we open our home/studio unofficially during 3daysofdesign?
Shared the idea with Jake over morning coffee.
Done deal.
Already working on the concept.
Not on the programme.
Still open.
POP X STUDIO.
Small Batch by Jake.
Objects.
Colour.
Kombucha.
SCOBYs.
A small side stop on Christianshavn.
Loewe translation
Saw this Loewe look yesterday.
Drawn to the whole combination.
Turned it into a block.
Colour sampling.
Stripes appeared on the way over.
Will start painting today.
Masking tape
Have been searching for masking tape in different widths. Found it. Bought it.
3 mm.
6 mm.
10 mm.
Also got 40 mm, which I had mistaken for 4 m. Online shopping does that to me sometimes. Guess I have to make big stripes too.
I like stripes.
Also really like this packaging.
Test: Colour turning corners
Still thinking about how to work with imperfect edges.
So now I’m testing colour turning around the corner instead.
A bend.
While sanding and repainting an older block, something else appeared too.
The meeting between old matte test paint and new wood paint.
Matte vs gloss.
I want to play with that meeting too.
Getting glossy varnish.
Test: Controlled chaos
Some blocks have tiny imperfections at the edges.
Just enough to make a sharp line uneven.
The wood also shows itself more when the colour field is clean.
So I’m testing another kind of colour meeting.
Raw wood.
Tape.
A controlled field.
Paint misbehaving inside it.
First test on paper.
Dense. Probably need to calm down.
Real paint
Picked up the first round of real paint this morning.
22 colours.
Already had 11.
1 doesn’t translate in this paint brand.
Also gave away all the colour samples.
Material upgrade.
Paint experience upgrade.
Finish upgrade.
Feels more serious now.
OPEN STUDIO?
Had someone by yesterday to look at blocks, sticks and colours.
We talked combinations.
What colours do in a room.
And on a small object.
How they shift when they meet.
Really liked it.
The objects are one thing.
The looking at colour together is another.
Now considering some kind of open studio hours.
POP-A-PAPAY
One colour is not translating well into real paint.
POP-A-PAPAY.
NCS S 0580-Y50R
The paint system can’t quite get it there.
Too bright. Too unstable. Something with the pigments.
Researching alternatives.
NCS S 0585-Y60R
NCS S 1080-Y50R
Not testing yet.
Looking.
Paint
Colour samples were for testing and choosing colours.
They got me to the colour collection.
They can be painted with.
With medium, retarder, varnish.
It works. But it doesn’t.
Not nice to paint with.
And not the quality I want.
So I have decided to shift all 34 colours to real paint.
More painting.
Less fighting the paint.
Shelf update
Added starting prices to the shelf.
Custom is possible.
Also decided to keep the first three blocks as early work.
Not everything has to leave.
Instagram reset
Posted a white post on Instagram yesterday.
Needed a pause in the feed. A reset.
Today I posted the first real POP X STUDIO post.
Blocks. Sticks. Colours. Copenhagen.
A shift.
Clearer now.
